Liz Truss: Preparing a blacklist of Russian oligarchs
The Foreign Ministry is preparing a “blacklist” of Russian oligarchs who will be targeted for sanctions in the coming months, Liz Truss said.
The foreign minister said there would be “nowhere to hide” for Vladimir Putin’s super-rich Kremlin allies.
The warning comes after Boris Johnson last week named eight wealthy Russians who will be hit by travel bans and asset freezes, along with more than 100 individuals, entities and affiliates.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Ms Truss said new names would be added to the list every few weeks as ministers sought to increase pressure on Mr Putin following his invasion of Ukraine.
“We have already received letters to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from lawyers, threatening us, so we must ensure that the files are properly prepared and that we have the right evidence before sanctioning these individuals,” she said. declared.
“That’s why we are taking it step by step, but we are working on this blacklist and we will continue to sanction new oligarchs every few weeks.
“We must make the situation deeply painful for the oligarchs who support the Putin regime. There are more than a hundred Russian billionaires.
“Nothing is on the table in terms of who or what we are targeting. We are very clear about that – we are very ready to do the right thing.
