After Avengers: Endgame, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, better known as the Russo Brothers, come up with the action thriller The Gray Man. The film which also has Dhanush was released on Netflix today. Let’s see how the movie is.

Story
Court Genty, codenamed Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling), a gray man working for the CIA, is sent to kill a villain, Sierra Four, in Bangkok and discovers he has dark secrets about the agency in a flash drive . Sierra Six kills him, takes him and flees. So their boss Denny Carmichael (Regé-Jean Page) tasks fellow psychopath Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) with killing Sierra Six and bringing back the evidence. What are these secrets? Did Lloyd kill Sierra Six? What happened next ? These will be answered in the main movie.

Good points

The story is familiar enough but it’s the racy storyline that keeps your eyes glued to the screens until the happy ending. Thanks to the trio – Joe Russo, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for making the movie watchable with engaging action sequences like the plane crash scene or the train fight.

When it comes to performance, Ryan Gosling gives his best as a man who works as an assassin and sticks to the ethics of saving the naive. His performance is subtle yet stunning.

The performance we need to talk about is Lloyd’s, played by Chris Evans. So far we know him as an Avenger but this film casts him as a ruthless, psychopathic agent who goes to any lengths to do whatever he wants. Its performance is top notch and the villain is handsome enough to fall in love with. His remarkable performance is one of the film’s greatest assets.

Coming to Dhanush, his screen presence is limited but he creates a huge impact with his action stunts. Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thorton, Julia Butters and Jessica Henwick do their best.

Negative points

The story itself is a big disappointment for The Gray Man, and it’s highly predictable. When you have star actors on board, you have to come up with an extraordinary storyline, filled with jaw-dropping twists and turns. But Russo Brothers chooses a simple, familiar cat-and-mouse game story and shoots it with grandeur. They failed to amuse the public who expected a lot from the film.

The story of the agency’s dark secrets could have been shown in detail. The roles of Ana de Armas and Dhanush could have been well crafted, to create much more impact on the story.

Technical aspects

As mentioned earlier, the directing duo – Joe Russo and Anthony Russo – completely failed to come up with an engaging story. As directors, they succeed. Stephen F Windon’s cinematography is commendable. Some shots in the action sequences look extraordinary.

Henry Jackman’s musical score is enjoyable in the film, as is Jeff Groth and Pietro Scalia’s editing. The production values are top notch and the awe-inspiring visuals are just a witness.

Verdict
Overall, The Gray Man is an action thriller with an old school story and intense action episodes. The performances of Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling are exceptional. The Netflix original offers nothing new in terms of story. If you’re a fan of action movies, get him a watch. Releasing the lavish film on big screens might have a good answer.
