Yeah, unfortunately, I think I’m going to skip the voiceovers this season if it’s all local. No shame on those who don’t care, you all deserve to watch something you love the way you want. But personally, I have no interest in supporting such a backward movement which will only harm the industry in the future (given the number of CR licenses and duplicates, it is naïve to say otherwise). It would be hypocritical to support these duplicates and then turn around and be upset when they are successful enough that CR sees no reason to change things. And while an individual voiceover might sound great, artificially shrinking your talent pool so drastically only hurts the industry and the season as a whole, end of story.

And fwiw it’s not even about Dani Chambers having another major role in the same season or anything, this stuff happens all the time in waves even with remote taping and even the JPN side isn’t immune to it either (current record I remember is Yuma Uchida with three or four lead roles in one season). Plus, there are actors like Ben Balmaceda or Josh Bangle who are new to getting major roles, which is always a good thing.

It’s that most voice recordings of ADR, video games (even AAA), original animations, etc. still allow for a variety of studio + remote recordings, but CR/Sony won’t for a multitude of reasons that have nothing to do with making a better product. And I just can’t stand that even though I’ve watched and enjoyed dubs alongside subs for years before.

It’s a pretty solid cast, internally, but it would have been cool if they used remote recording to have Wendee Lee as Manabu for a shared Conan cast-gag. Then again, they didn’t use the Kirito gag for Kamui in Full diveI guess I’m not surprised.

I highly doubt that fewer people watching the dubbed version would send them a message that they need to do more remote recodes. But if it’s just a matter of principal, then ok I understand.

This anime is the only one to hold my attention this season. I’m so glad this and others are being dubbed so soon. This is exactly what I was hoping for with Funi & Crunchy working together again – the return of one to two week simuldubs. Very happy

Oh sure, I’m not naive enough to think my choices would matter. The sudden change was really sad to see someone who always wanted this side of the industry to grow and improve for the better, and that was actually the case until now. And I know it’s kinda silly to admit since there’s definitively bigger problems in the anime industry, but it’s more exhausting than it’s worth caring about something and feeling like no one else really does (because they don’t don’t already care about voiceovers or that they’re happier to get them faster) so it’s easier for me to walk away and watch CR’s subs for now if I don’t like what theyre doing.

So going forward, the norm will be to condemn Crunchyroll whenever they advertise non-union dubs. I also want voice actors to be paid more, but anime is a business. Crunchyroll will continue to ensure that the vast majority of its voice acting is non-unionized in Dallas.

I think the return of timely simuldubs has more to do with the relaxed COVID restrictions.
