Nearly 700 migrants enter the UK across the Channel in a single day

Nearly 700 migrants entered the UK across the English Channel in a single day, a record for this year, the country’s Ministry of Defense revealed on Tuesday.

Some 696 migrants in 14 small boats crossed the channel between France and the United Kingdom on Monday. The previous record dated back to April when 651 people made the trip.

Although French authorities stopped one of the boats carrying 35 people, its government has been accused of failing to fulfill its moral obligation to protect the vulnerable and prevent smugglers from exploiting migrants seeking to enter the Kingdom. -United.

“France has a moral and international obligation to protect vulnerable people, save lives, arrest smugglers and fight organized crime,” Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke said in a statement.

Elphicke, who is the representative for the port city of Dover – a major UK port and terminal destination for migrants arriving in the UK – said “the small craft crisis must be a key priority for the next Prime Minister”.

The latest figure brings the total number of migrants arriving in the UK across the English Channel in 2022 to more than 17,000.

In 2021, no less than 28,526 people would have made the perilous journey to the UK, an increase of 8,404 from 2020.

In April, the government put forward a highly controversial plan that would see asylum seekers sent one way to Rwanda.

The plan has drawn criticism across the UK from opposition parties and human rights organizations as well as the international community, including the UN.

The new asylum program was the subject of legal action and the government’s first flight to Rwanda was canceled by a last-minute court decision in June.
