Erik ten Hag is Manchester United’s preferred managerial candidate as they continue to search for a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, although his record against English clubs is not particularly good.
His Ajax side have faced Premier League opponents on six occasions but only once have Ten Hag found themselves on the winning side. The Dutch club were denied a Champions League final meeting with Liverpool in 2019 when Tottenham produced a stunning semi-final comeback while Mauricio Pochettino – who is also heavily linked with the Old Trafford job – was in load of north Londoners.
After winning the first leg at Spurs with a strike from Donny van de Beek, Lucas Moura stunned the Johan Cruyff Arena when he completed his hat trick with almost the last kick of the encounter to stun Ajax on away goals – this came after the hosts had led 2-0 on the evening.

The following season they met Chelsea in the Champions League group stage and lost 1-0 in their home game. Fans who traveled to Stamford Bridge for the reverse witnessed another fight back from an English club, with Chelsea coming from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 after two players were sent off Ajax.
Ten Hag continued their poor run against English sides with two 1-0 defeats to Liverpool in the Champions League last season. These results leave the Dutchman with a win rate of just under 17% against English top-flight clubs.
