Manchester United leadership candidate Erik ten Hag took English lessons in a bid to succeed Ralf Rannick in the Old Trafford hotseat, according to reports.

The Red Devils are unlikely to offer caretaker boss Rangnick the job on a permanent basis regardless of his performance by the end of the season as the German has taken the club back to the top four.

Ajax boss Ten Hag is one of the main contenders for the PSG manager’s succession Mauricio Pochettino also top of United’s shortlist.

These two aren’t the only names in the frame to succeed Rangnick, with the likes of Brighton boss Graham Potter and even Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti linked to work.

Ten Hag was given the chance to manage the Premier League last summer but rejected Tottenham’s interest in staying at Ajax – but that’s a different story this time around.

According to The daily mailthe Dutchman is desperate to land the job at United and has been taking English lessons as he prepares for the talks.

Although Ten Hag can speak English at a good level at present, he wants to be fluent by the summer so he can convey his philosophy to the United board – and eventually to the players.

When the 52-year-old had brief talks with Spurs last year, the language barrier was reportedly an issue during the talks.

Ajax have been told Ten Hag intends to leave the club at the end of the season, and although he is not chosen by United he would be open to a transfer to another Premier League club .

But it’s United he ‘cares for’ and he intends to bring Ajax assistant Mitchel van der Gaag with him to England.

United decision-makers plan to interview a host of candidates once the season is over and Ten Hag will need to make an impression to beat Pochettino, Ancelotti and others for the job.
