Speaking to the media, he said: “We have received reports that two people have been taken to hospital after a road accident. The man identified as Deep Sidhu died during treatment and the woman is undergoing treatment and is now out of danger.

Who is Deep Sidhu?

Sidhu, who was born in Muktsar, Punjab, had a law degree and practiced as a lawyer for a brief period before moving into acting.

Although he acted in a few films, Sidhu’s film career never took off and he returned to practicing law.

He also got involved in politics and in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Sidhu campaigned for BJP candidate Sunny Deol.

But most people outside Punjab got to know him in November 2020 when farmers protesting the Three Farm Bills started marching towards Delhi.

“English speaking farmer”

A video of him went viral on social media as an ‘English speaking farmer protester’ after Sidhu was seen talking to cops blocking the road for the caravan of farmers heading to Delhi.

Since then, he has been largely forgotten as the thousands of farmer protesters at Delhi’s borders have taken center stage.

January 26, 2021 Violence at Fort Rouge

That was soon to change – on January 26, 2021, when protesting farmers staged tractor rallies on Republic Day.

The gathering soon descended into chaos, and many separated from the convoy and pre-agreed on routes.

One of these splinter groups traveled to Fort Rouge and what followed was unprecedented.

They clashed with the police and retook Fort Rouge.

One protester even climbed the flagpole and hoisted a Nishan Sahib (Sikh religious flag) on it.

As the country watched in utter shock the events unfolding at the Red Fort, many identified Sidhu in the crowd and it was all downhill for him from there.

Protesting farmers and politicians, including Sunny Deol, distanced themselves from the actor and he was left alone to defend himself.

His version of the story

A cornered Sidhu tried to explain his position and his side of the story, but to no avail.

“I did not drive people to the Red Fort. It was the decision of the public who had come from Punjab to protest. Nobody was driving them,” he said in one of several videos posted on his social media accounts. .

He also repeated his previous claims that the crowd did not remove the national flag before hoisting the Nishan Sahib and a farmers’ flag on the flagpole.

“The unfurling of the Farmers and Khalsa flag at the Red Fort was done as a symbol of unity because it was done solely and solely to mark our protest in this fight. The Habs were not disrespected , and there was no violence or destruction of public property there,” he said.

After being on the loose for more than a week, Sidhu was arrested on February 9, 2021.

His lawyers had argued that Sidhu was not behind the violence that erupted in the capital on January 26, and he was released on bail on April 17, 2021.
