English Channel, the 19-year-old son of Smart Strike and perennial top turf stallion, has sadly been diagnosed with multiple health issues. The Channel is unlikely to happen again in the 2022 season.
The impressive English Channel racing career for owner James Scatuorchio, under training Todd Pletcher, included six Tier 1 victories culminating in a victory in the John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf with career earnings of over 5 .3 million.
English Channel’s impact at stud has been just as impressive, if not more so, than his own personal racing record. As the sire of Grade 1 winners on turf and dirt, the English Channel offspring has an average lifetime income per starter of over $97,000. He sired seven champions, 32 ranked stake winners, and 61 stake winners. With seven millionaires and 12 individual 1st year winners, his offspring has earned over $62 million combined.
“This is an unfortunate blow for a stallion who was reaching the pinnacle of his career and finally getting the respect he deserved,” read a statement from Calumet Farm. “However, at Calumet we strive to provide the best care for all of our horses and we will always put the health, safety and welfare of the horse first. We’ll be watching the English channel on a daily basis, but at this time it doesn’t look like the English channel will be happening again in the upcoming season.
