British Open 2022: Stephen Maguire stunned by Zhang Anda and Dechawat Poomjaeng win return to snooker tour

Zhang Anda upset Stephen Maguire 4-0 to advance to the last 64 of the English Open.

Maguire is ranked 45 places higher than Zhang but was outplayed by his opponent, who made it a century in the second frame before moving past the former ranking event winner six times in the final two frames.

It is the third time Maguire has lost in the qualifying rounds this season after failing in the main draw at the European Masters and the British Open.

Gilbert, Walden and McGill earn English Open berths


Dechawat Poomjaeng won his first match in nearly three years as he returned to the circuit after winning Asia Q School earlier in 2022.

Poomjaeng, who is a popular figure on the tour, edged out Alexander Ursenbacher 4-3 in a very close match, neither player having been able to take more than one frame in advance.

The only other final decider on Saturday was Andres Petrov who won against Brazilian Victor Sarkis, 3-2 behind.

European Masters champion last season Fan Zhengyi was right to Andy Hicks – win 4-1 – while Ng On Yee was beaten 4-0, as they lost against John Asley in suspicious business.

Mark Davis qualified for the main draw for the first time this season with some of his best snooker in a long time as he won 4-2 over Xiao Guodong.
