Kenny Dalglish has warned Celtic that English clubs will be hovering around Ange Postecoglou after his impressive debut season in Scotland.
The Australian joined last summer and critics suggested he would be out by Christmas after a poor start, but he turned it around and they now have a hand on the Premiership trophy.
A treble is still on the cards for Celtic with a Scottish Cup semi-final clash with Rangers coming up on Sunday at Hampden.
With Celtic short of winners in each of the last two Old Firm games, they will enter this one as favorites to reach another Scottish Cup final.
And Dalglish wouldn’t be surprised to see English Premier League clubs showing interest this summer.
But he believes Postecoglou is enjoying life at Celtic Park and could have everything he needs in Scotland with a Champions League group stage spot set to fall into their hands next season.
Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers have both left Glasgow for England in recent seasons and Celtic and Liverpool legend Dalglish wouldn’t be surprised to see them eyeing Postecoglou.
He said: “It’s not just in England. In Scotland, even Celtic fans didn’t know Ange Postecoglou.
“They would have had very little knowledge of what he had done in his career. But I think everyone sat up and took notice.
“Would clubs in the south be watching Ange Postecoglou now? I think they would be rude not to!
“But he looks happy at Celtic. He’s at one of the biggest clubs here.
“It’s not a given, but obviously they’re favorites to win the league and then they’re straight into the Champions League section.
“Where is he going to get a job that will give him that? He could get anything he wants here. The English Premier League is an attraction for managers in Scotland.
“But it’s less appealing if you have a team in Scotland going straight into the Champions League section.
“Everyone is different but it’s an attraction for your team to play in the Champions League.
“Alright, you’ll get some (beats) because you’re going to be in the fourth pot. But you’re still playing it.”
Gerrard and Rodgers both left Rangers and Celtic mid-season and were widely criticized by fans, but Dalglish suggested both turn down further offers.
Postecoglou has overseen an incredible turnaround at the top of the Premiership, but after initial criticism Dalglish urged fans to give him a break anyway.
He added: “I’ll tell you for a fact that they (Leicester and Villa) weren’t the first option they had.
“They had been shaken up before, both of them. But they eventually moved on.
“If Ange has any ambition to go to the Premier League, I don’t know. He’s certainly done brilliantly for Celtic and that’s the most important thing.
“He came in and he was getting kicked out after two weeks because he sucked and everything.
“Now it’s a gift from God and people want to push it forward or say, ‘Should he get a better contract’?
“Give the guy a chance to breathe. He did brilliantly. Everything else will follow. Whatever happens, will happen.”
